The scope of data used within the collective management of related rights is very specific, and is generally the subject – at least indirectly – of national legislation under which MLCs operate.
DDEX’s Electronic Release Notification (ERN) Standard that is used in the context of download stores and streaming services etc. is concerned with exclusive rights and commercial deals, and it may contain album art. By contrast MLCs are concerned with a different set of usage types: they need data about rights holders, they require the data which demonstrates eligibility and they have no concern with album artworks.
In order to remunerate non-local right-holders, MLCs need to exchange usage data and revenues with each other. The DDEX data feeds that power online music services do not cover the needs of the collective management sector. DDEX provides the RDR Message Suite Standards to cover these specific needs.
Although MLCs are usually not concerned with album artwork in the context of sound recordings, there may be reprographic rights and uses related to artworks.
