RCSUM overview

RCSUM enables the communication of both data-related and claim-related errors, each of which may affect the registration of a rights claim and any subsequent royalty payouts to rights holders, typically record companies and/or performers.

RCSUM is issued in response to a DeclarationOfSoundRecordingRightsClaimMessage and informs the sender whether the message structure (XSD), message data, and the rights claim itself have passed validation.

An RCSUM may be generated by RDx, by a music licensing company, or by a licensing company via RDx. Regardless of the source, the RegistrationStatus of a claim is determined by the highest severity errorassociated with that claim.

Although the MLC 1.4 schema defines all elements within the RegistrationError composite as optional, consistent and meaningful communication requires that certain elements be populated whenever an error is reported. This ensures transparent expectations regarding the impact of errors on claim registration and enables more efficient rights processing for all stakeholders.

To standardise error reporting and support predictable business behaviour, the following elements must be populated:

  1. ErrorType (AVS);

  1. ErrorSeverity (AVS);

  1. ErroneousElement (string);

  1. ErrorDescription (string);

  1. DataExpected (string); and

  1. RegistrationStatus (AVS).

Together, these elements provide the full context required to interpret validation outcomes and to understand how errors affect rights claim registration and potential payouts.
